LIVER FUNCTION TEST (LFT) – Detailed Information

🔬 What is LFT?

Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that evaluate how well your liver is working. These tests measure levels of enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver.

📊 Components of LFT and Their Significance:

Parameter

Normal Range

Significance

SGPT (ALT)

7–56 U/L

Elevated in liver cell injury, hepatitis, fatty liver

SGOT (AST)

10–40 U/L

Elevated in liver disease, also heart/muscle injury

ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase)

40–129 U/L

High in bile duct blockage, liver disease, bone disorders

Total Bilirubin

0.1–1.2 mg/dL

High in jaundice, liver dysfunction

Direct Bilirubin

0.1–0.3 mg/dL

Indicates obstruction or liver cell damage

Indirect Bilirubin

0.2–0.8 mg/dL

Elevated in hemolysis or liver processing issues

Total Protein

6.0–8.3 g/dL

Assesses overall liver synthetic function

Albumin

3.5–5.0 g/dL

Low in chronic liver disease or malnutrition

Globulin

2.0–3.5 g/dL

Elevated in liver cirrhosis, infections, immune disorders

A/G Ratio (Albumin/Globulin)

1.1–2.5

Reversed in liver disease, nephrotic syndrome

🧾 Why LFT is Done:

  • To diagnose hepatitis, fatty liver, or cirrhosis

  • To evaluate jaundice

  • Monitoring alcoholic liver damage

  • Assessing medication-induced liver toxicity

  • To check liver function before surgery

  • Follow-up in chronic liver diseases (e.g., Hepatitis B/C)

🚨 Symptoms Suggesting LFT is Needed:

  • Yellowing of skin/eyes (Jaundice)

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain/swelling

  • Dark urine or pale stool

  • Itching

🧪 How is the Test Done?

  • A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm

  • Fasting is usually not required

  • Results are typically available within 24 hours
